Description
Caption on reverse reads: The East Hampton Union School showing the new High School wing added to the rear of the original building, about 1907. When the main portion of the building was demolished in 1922, to make way for the present Middle School, the rear portion was saved and moved to the westerly corner of Fithian Lane and Main Street. At the time, Clinton Hall, which for years had been the center of all town activities, had been torn down, and the front portion, the original "Academy," restored. A group of East Hampton businessmen, all members of the Masonic Lodge, sensing the need for a meeting hall for various village affairs, felt that the former High School building might not only answer this need, but also make a permanent home for the Lodge, which up to this time had met in the Oddfellows building. In its new location, a new pillard front with vestibule was added. The first floor, was converted to a public hall with a small stage and kitchen at the rear. Bowling alleys were installed in the basement. The second floor, which had formerly been the main High School assembly hall, was rented to the Lodge. One room at the front, over the vestibule, was used by the village Police Dept. All in all, it was a very worthwhile venture, and without doubt, had it not been for the stock market crash of 1929, the Masonic Lodge would have eventually taken over the entire building. This, they were never able to do. After the Second World War, the building was sold to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Several improvements were made and the Lodge continued to use the second floor. In May 1979, fire broke out in the kitchen area, and burned up through a portion of the roof. Unfortunately, it was not repaired, and the original old High School was demolished. Copy by C.
