THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

The Long Island Daily Press Distinguished Service Award is given by the newspaper each year to the citizen of Nassau and Suffolk Counties who is judged to have rendered the most outstanding service during the

receding year. The Distinguished Service Award is not given for valor, but in recognition of leadership, inspiration or devotion to a cause re- sulting in something significant and worthwhile, representing an advance over previous conditions or meeting an unusual problem. The nature of the service may be civic, governmental, commercial, moral, social, cul- tural or educational, all of which are recognized essential factors in the life of the community.

The award is restricted to residents of Nassau and Suffolk Coun- ties and to services affecting the Counties or a portion thereof. It is equally available to public officials and those engaged in private and profaesional parsuheand:to bolfimien and womens

Before making the award each year, the committee studies the public services and achievements of many outstanding citizens engaged in diverse activities accruing to the welfare of their community and to society as a whole. The award consists of a silver plaque with a design symbolic of service to the community and an inscription memorializing the individual's contribtuion to the public good. It is accompanied by an engrossed citation setting forth the specific achievements of the recipient.
