Description

This scrapbook was created by Ward Melville's secretary, Evelyn Wyckoff, and continued by the Stony Brook Community Fund staff, which later became the Ward Melville Heritage Organization. The scrapook chronicles Melville's "restoration plan" for Stony Brook Village Green, and his efforts to surround the green with "Early Republican" or "Colonial" style structures, between 1939 and the Spring of 1941. The scrapbook includes news coverage of the restoration, profiles of Melville and his wife, coverage of Richard Haviland Smythe, the architect who helped Melville with his "restoration" project, invitations, postcards, maps of the area, and other related ephemera about Stony Brook Village. The Stony Brook Community Fund, which emerged from Melville's efforts, and today is known as the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, continued to add to the scrapbook with important press coverage into 2019.
