Caption on back of photograph reads: This photo of Janet Barnes was taken in 1943 at the annual June meeting of the Shinnecocks, celebrated the first Sunday of the month. This is an annual church meeting at which members of the tribe come from far and near to attend. In former days, members used to go from house to house to partake of delicious foods after the church services. Another Algonkian tribe, the Narragansetts of Rhode Island, celebrate a meeting known among them as August meeting, the second Saturday and Sunday of the month. Indian dress is worn by many of the Narragansetts with tribal ceremonies taking place. By contrast, no Indian apparel is seen at the Shinnecock June meeting and no Indian rituals take place.
