Whaling log of the ships Andes, Beaver, Argonaut and Cadmus. Pages 1-51: incomplete account kept aboard the whaling ship Andes, on a voyage from Patagonia to Sag Harbor, N.Y., 29 June 1822 - 4 March 1823, commanded by Maxwell Griffing, Captain; pages 3-8 missing, 5 July 1822 to 2 August 1822; pages 52-54 blank. Coordinates not recorded on this voyage. Pp.'s 55-83: incomplete account kept aboard the whaling (?_see end of this note field) ship Beaver, on a voyage from New York, N.Y. to Canton (Whampoa, China), 15 May 1824 - 12 September 1824 (weighed anchor at Whampoa, China), commanded by Frederick W. DePoister, Captain; on last page (81), picks up again with summary entry on 31 January 1825 ("left Whampoa, bound for New York, doubled Cape of Good Hope"); final entry remarks that "on 24 December 1824, the ship Royal George of London caught fire....blew up, a great many Chinamen killed by explosion." Pages 83-84 blank (mislabeled, should be 82-83). Cataloger's note: this ship/voyage isn't mentioned in either Starbucks or Lunds works; presumably Mercator Cooper was either onboard or owner of ship, as it's recorded in his journal, along with the 3 other whaling accounts; however, home port of New York, N.Y. is unusual (not Sag Harbor or Cold Spring Harbor). Coordinates not recorded on this voyage. Inserted notes (possibly by Pennypacker) state this was not a whaling ship, hence the lack of entry into the above mentioned books. Page 85: list of catchs for July 1828 (on board ship Argonaut); pp.'s 86-87 missing; pp.'s 88-169: incompete account kept aboard the whaling ship Argonaut, on a voyage from Sag Harbor to the coast of Patagonia, commanded by Uriah Sayre, Captain, 18 July 1828 - 11 November 1828 (pages 125-126, 129-138 blank); account resumes 2 February 1829 - 24 April 1829 (pages 139-169); page 170 blank. Pp.'s 171-200: incomplete account of kept aboard the whaling ship Cadmus, on a voyage from Sag Harbor to the coast of Patagonia, commanded by George Howell, Captain, 22 June 1829 - 30 October 1829 (pages 198-199 partially torn, contain catch lists; pages 201-213 contain poetry, including "Nobody Coming to Marry Me," "Loss of the Ship Albion," "The Bride's Farewell" by Lord Byron, "Farewell," "Sailor Boy," "Home Sweet Home."); pp.'s 211-212 contain lunar observations on 22 August 1822 and 20 January 1823 (must be from first account in journal, on board the Andes); page 213 contains 3 entries of financial contracts between New York and London individuals, dated October 1808 (includes following names: William Atkinson, John Harrison and Thomas Hammond; James Rammington; William Humphreys, Peter Nelson, Benjamin Miller); journal resumes pp.'s 214-217: 13 October 1829 - 30 October 1829 (last entry, still at sea); pp.'s 218-219 blank; pp.'s 220-221 contain list "the latitude and longitude of a voyage in the ship Cadmus in the year 1829 and 1830" (Starbuck states voyage ended 8 April 1829, but this list confirms voyage continued through 1830); pp.'s 222-225 blank; sketch of ship on back cover. Inserted handwritten abstractions of parts of 3 of 4 voyages in this journal.
