President John Tyler writes Juliana McLachlan Gardiner with his condolences after the death of her husband, David Gardiner (1784-1844) onboard the U.S.S. Princeton after the explosion of the "Peacemaker" gun on February 28, 1844. Gardiner and his daughters Margaret and Julia were onboard the Princeton at the time of the explosion as guests of President Tyler. Tyler writes to David's widow about ceremonies in honor of her husband, and expresses concern for Juliana's daughters.
