This newspaper issue has an item on John Howard Payne's trip to Georgia to meet with the Cherokees. Presumably the arrest referred to relates to his visit with Chief John Ross, during which local authorities viewed his presence as suspicious, and briefly arrested him. Payne was very interested in supporting the Cherokees during their fight against removal from Georgia, and he sought to collect on their culture and folkways.
