Description
This image was scanned from photographs of Fort Tyler on Gardiner's Island lent to the Long Island Collection for scanning by the Springs Historical Society/Library. The images are probably from before World War I, judging by the appearance of the people in one of the images. The fort was constructed in 1898, and garrisoned during World War II. Later, the fort was used for target practice by the Army until 1975. The lack of damage from target practice, and the labels indicating the fort is abandoned suggest the photographs may date from 1898 to 1916. The photographers are unknown.
