Description

Philanthropist W. W. Corcoran of Washington, D.C. had Payne's remains exhumed in Tunis (where he died serving as a diplomat) and returned to the United States for burial in 1883. Corcoran owned a cemetery called Oak Hill near Georgetown, and he had Payne reinterred there.
