Description

This is a history of the "eastern defense" system of forts around Long Island Sound and the eastern end of Long Island, mostly focusing on the first half of the 20th century. There are additional notations from 1983 regarding the artillery on Great Gull Island as part of Fort Michie during World War II. Informaiton is offered on Gardiner's Island and Fort Tyler, Fort H.G. Wright on Fisher's Island, Fort Terry on Plum Island, and Forts Mansfield and Trumbull on the opposite side of Long Island Sound. An annotated copy of the photo of Fort Michie (Great Gull Island) was provided by Col. John Bradshaw. The original of the photograph is available as file 30625990000812.
