Description

This 1637 map of North America shows the region from the present-day Carolinas through Nova Scotia. It is drawn from Johannes De Laet's map of 1630 , which was created and engraved by Hessel Gerritsz of the Dutch East India Company. De Laet's map was the first to name Manhattan, New Amsterdam, the North River (or Hudson River) and South River (or Delaware River), along with the first appearance of Massachusetts (and the recently established English Colony therein).
