Description
Bruce Collins identified this image as "Paige Topping in Bow, Peter Crockett at Engine." The boat shown here is clearly smaller than the boat in other images, and it can be seen attached to the larger boat as some sort of launch boat. These images are part of a series of photos Bruce Collins took from his hunting trips to Tangier Island. In many of the photographs, Robert Crockett, a Tangier Island waterman (or bayman) appears, along with his brother Peter Crockett, who is shown in this image. Elsewhere, Bruce Collins identifies Peter Crockett as a local sheriff. In his History Project, Inc. oral history, Bruce Collins told interviewer Tony Prohaska that he piloted the steamer Shinnecock out of Amagansett for Jack Edwards from 1954 until 1960. That date is used to estimate the date for these images. In other images, Bruce Collins explained that many of the Bunker Boats from Promised Land would head south for winter repairs along the Chesapeake, often continuing to fish at points south. Many of the employees of Promised Land also came from areas along the Chesapeake. Topping was from the East End but Peter Crockett was part of the Crockett family of Tangier Island. Also appearing from this same series on this boat are William Jacobs from East Hampton.
