Description

The two purse boats are traveling parallel, and the drive boat follows the purse boats as the fishermen prepare to set the purse net around a school of fish. Elsewhere, Bruce Collins explained that the purse boats brought a type of seine net called a purse net around a school of fish. The drive boat was used to understand where the fish were traveling, and the man in the drive boat is probably Edward Moore, who appears in other pictures in this collection as the "Drive Boat Man." In his History Project, Inc. oral history, Bruce Collins told interviewer Tony Prohaska that he piloted the steamer Shinnecock out of Amagansett for Jack Edwards from 1954 until 1960. That date is used to estimate the date for these images.
