Description

Bruce Collins labeled this image "A Great Compass Set Up." He wrote "Take note of the little round knob on the right side of the corss bar on the compass. That is what we steer the boat with. All we have to do is turn it right or left to the setting desired and off you go." This image was taken in a room with equipment and a steering wheel on a bunker boat, presumably the bridge of the Shinnecock, although it could be another bunker boat. In his History Project, Inc. oral history, Bruce Collins told interviewer Tony Prohaska that he piloted the steamer Shinnecock out of Amagansett for Jack Edwards from 1954 until 1960. That date is used to estimate the date for these images.
