Description

This steamer is a fishing ship, probably part of the fishing boats that came from Promised Land and worked for the Smith Meal Company catching bunker or menhaden. Bruce Collins notes the ship is "dead in the water" and the purse boats and drive boat are alongside the steamer. However, there does not appear to be anyone on deck. Bruce suggests the lack of visible fishermen could be because "it may be dinner time and all are in the galley." In his History Project, Inc. oral history, Bruce Collins told interviewer Tony Prohaska that he piloted the steamer Shinnecock out of Amagansett for Jack Edwards from 1954 until 1960. That date is used to estimate the date for these images.
