Description

This image shows one of the Menhaden or Bunker fish after it was caught. Bruce Collins noted the "average weight [is] 3/4 of a pound, although in the late fall up here they can weigh much more." Smith Meal Company and other fish factories in Promised Land, a section of Amagansett, were major local industries until the Smith Meal Co. closed their fish factory in 1968. Bunker or menhaden were the main fish converted to fish oil and other products at the fish factories. In his History Project, Inc. oral history, Bruce Collins told interviewer Tony Prohaska that he piloted the steamer Shinnecock out of Amagansett for Jack Edwards from 1954 until 1960.
