Description

This masters dissertation was prepared by Arnold M. Lewis, the son of prominent Sag Harbor resident Doctor Lewis. Arnold M. Lewis writes in his opening that " the study was made from the Spring of 1929 through the Fall of 1930." The preface is dated June 15, 1931. A comprehensive calculation and itemization of residents, buildings, industries, and socioeconomic measures, including amenities like the age of the furniture or the existence of indoor plumbing are enumerated to describe local residents. Additionally, glued into the dissertation are images from local places. Social customs, such as vandalism and how immigrants interacted with the rest of the community are discussed at length, along with pamphlets describing local organizations are also included. Statistics on crime and punishment and business ownership are provided, as are the death rates between 1890 and 1928. A particular focus is given to the period between c. 1880-1930.
