Description

This is William Jacobs of East Hampton (elsewhere identified as East Hampton Chief of Polilce) holding a decorative pintail decoy made by Lem and Steve Ward, world renowned decoy makers from Crisfield, Maryland. Jacobs is identified in other pictures showing a hunting trip to Tangier Island. Bruce Collins identified Lem Ward and Steve Ward as "our close friends," indicating both he and William Jacobs had a friendship with the Wards. This same decoy appears in another image from another angle In his History Project, Inc. oral history, Bruce Collins told interviewer Tony Prohaska that he piloted the steamer Shinnecock out of Amagansett for Jack Edwards from 1954 until 1960. That date is used to estimate the date for these images, many of which focus on travel related to the fishing industry. Many fishing boats were maintained in and around the Chesapeake in places like Reedville, Virginia and Shad Point Marina on the Wicomico River in Maryland.
