Description

This manuscript volume is titled "book of laws for East Hampton," and it contains the Duke of York's codified laws for each township, issued at the Hempstead Convention, in Hempstead Township, N.Y. on March 1, 1664, along with additional New York Colony laws from the administration of Governor Sir Edmund Andros, through 1674. This book contains the laws and codes for East Hampton from 1664-1674, which spans the administrations of both Colonial Governor Richard Nicolls (1664-1668) and Colonial Governor Sir Edmund Andros (1674-1688). The Duke's Laws were designed to compile English laws from other English colonies when the English government took over the Dutch Colony of New Netherland. The Duke's Laws were filed with each of the Towns in Long Island, and they contained particularly detailed laws for colonial life on Long Island, covering everything from the process for arrests to the brand marks to be used by each Township for livestock. The laws were arranged in alphabetical order.
