Moran accompanied Hayden's U.S. Geological Survey west exploring lands that would become Yellowstone National Park and the preserved lands around the Grand Canyon. References are made to Fort Hall and the Snake River. The artwork Moran created on this expedition helped persuade Congress to preserve the lands.
