Description

Mary E. Satterly Rowland, the wife of Captain Henry Lucas Rowland (1827-1876), recorded this first volume of what appears to be at least three separate bound volumes of her journal during sea voyages accompany her husband. This volume is written on the brig Thomas W. Rowland (presumably named for Henry's father). Her voyage included travel with a three week old baby. This volume covers events from October 16, 1855 through February 18, 1857. Mary and Henry Rowland resided in Setauket, New York when they were not at sea. Other digitized diaries appear to relate to a voyage in 1867 on the brig Mary E. Rowland to Genoa, Italy and New Orleans, Louisiana.
