Logbook written by ship's captain, Benjamin Jones on a voyage between September 27, 1862 and October 8, 1863. Included in the account is a reference to a collision with a ship called the Kate Hastings, along with a reference to passing a ship Maria Somer. Other references are made to Confederate raider or pirate ships. Jones and his crew picked up a large cargo of tea in China, along with passengers bound for New York City. Included in the passengers are a "Mrs. Captain Moonie" or "Mooney" with a baby, who dies on the voyage. The Mary and Louisa was built in Port Jefferson, N.Y. by W. Bacon in 1857, according to Lloyd's Register of American Shipping (1869 ed.).
