Description

This appears to be the diary kept by Ellen Elizabeth Evans Jones (1843-1935) from Setauket, NY who accompanied her husband Captain Benjamin Jones on a voyage to Peru. The note in the front of the volume references Chimbote, Peru along with at least one other port, and a return to Falmouth, presumably Falmouth, Massachusetts. Jones refers to carrying guano, which was a popular fertilizer and a major export of Peru at the time, back to America. Entries include purchases, the weather, notes about sailing conditions, and what even appears to be some political comments on then-President Ulysses S. Grant. The entries appear to cover January 1, 1875 through September
