Description

The Pharaoh and Fowler Families depicted here were prominent families in the Montaukett tribe. Traditionally, the Pharaoh family were leaders of the tribe. In this picture, which is dated 1924, the caption indicates the individuals standing in the back row, from left to right are Charles Fowler, John Fowler, Pocahontas Pharaoh and Sam Pharaoh. Seated in the front row are Marguerite Fowler, George Fowler, and Maria Pharaoh (Banks). A note below the caption indicates that Marguerite Fowler and John Fowler are the children of George Fowler. These images are part of the Fowler family photo albums, a collection of images on the Montaukett and Shinnecock people, which were donated to the Long Island Collection in 1997.
