Description

Note written on back reads: "Photo of the Grave of Genl. Woodhull at Mastic, Long Island, N.Y. was taken by Ted (Jno. B. F. Lawrence) in the Winter of 1905." The Woodhull Cemetery is actually located in present day Mastic Beach.
The text on the stone was enhanced after the photo was developed, presumably to improve legibility. Other images in the same folder show the gravestone without enhanced text.

Note
General Nathaniel Woodhull (1722-1776) was a leader of the New York Militia and the New York Provincial Congress. He was also the brother-in-law of Declaration of Independence signer William Floyd. Woodhull became a martyr after his death during the Battle of Long Island for allegedly being beaten and refusing to say "God Save the King," insisting on saying "God Save Us All."
