This item is cataloged as: "Sale of rights of commonage in Montauk and another throughout East Hampton Township, N.Y., by John Miller, yeoman, and wife Mary Miller, to Samuel Mulford; July 20, 1698." This John Miller is identified as moving to Elizabethtown, N.J. in 1698 and probably dying in 1699 in the Purcell B. Robertson Profiles of the Early Settlers of East Hampton. Robertson notes that Mary Miller may have been at Mary Pierson Miller, although Robertson acknowledges there is some dispute. It is unclear whether the Samuel Mulford involved in this transaction was Samuel Mulford (1644-1725), known as "Fishhooks", or his son, Samuel Mulford (1678-1743).
