Page's 1-6: record of whale bone bought of natives, list of whale oil "stowed in the hole," list of sperm oil shipped home from Hobertown; pp.'s 7-108: incomplete account kept aboard the whaling ship Levant, on a voyage from Sag Harbor, N.Y. to the North Pacific Ocean, 7 August 1851 - ? (dates contained in this journal are 7 August 1851 - 25 October 1855), owned by Huntting Cooper, commanded by Captain Mercator Cooper. Account contains large gaps: 29 October 1851 - 4 November 1852 (pages torn out); 25 May 1853 (last entry off Alaskan Coast, in Bering Sea) - 2 February 1855 (restarts, nearly two years later, in South Pacific, with a cargo of Chinese passengers). Other gaps: 8 April - 16 May 1855; 26 May - 25 June 1855; intermittent entries between 26 June - 15 October 1855 (Lund lists ship as sold in a foreign port). Inserted handwritten and typed abstractions of parts of voyage. Name plate attached to cover: M.C. Kendrick Southampton, # 3 (of 10) (Kendrick was donor).
