Description

A copy of the seal from the Andros Patent, 1677. It's unclear when the seal was made, but the ink appears to be more of a fountain pen or ink pen, suggesting a post-1800 creation of the copy. The original dates to 1677, and would have most likely been part of the Smithtown or Richard Smythe copy of the Andros Patent issued in 1677. Andros issued several patents as the Royal Governor, but in the context of the other materials in this box, and with the 1677 date, the Smythe/Smithtown patent is the most likely. Richard Smythe's patent from Andros basically gave him a tax abatement for a couple years and granted him the land rights for all of what became Smithtown. It is unknown who made this copy, but it's most likely a member of the Smith Family, given the records found with it.
