Description

Built in 1804 (despite the note on the image), this house was the residence of Colonel Edwin Rose (1807-1864) in the Hayground section of Bridgehampton. New York. The house was built for Rose's father, Dr. Rufus Rose and was expanded by Edwin as an adult. According to William Donaldson Halsey and the Town of Southampton, "Dr. Rufus Rose, [was a] brother of General Abraham [Rose, and]...was surgeon of the militia. A graduate of Columbia University of New York, and practiced in Bridgehampton for about 40 years." Edwin's son, also named Rufus Rose, later left an endowment for Hay Ground Cemetery in 1913.
