One of a series of seven watercolors featuring the Montauk Association houses, which are cataloged as [7 watercolor sketches of cottages on the Benson Property, Montauk, L. I. by Eloise Payne Luquer, circa 1882]. These homes were built on property owned by Arthur Benson for a group of wealthy industrialists Benson considered friends. The watercolors were painted by Eloise Luquer, a grandniece of John Howard Payne who wrote "Home! Sweet Home!" Each house is labeled with the owner's name on the back. The Montauk Association houses are shingle style buildings designed by McKim, Mead, and White, and built in 1881, following the plans created by Frederick Law Olmstead. This particular image shows the Club House, which burned in 1933.
