Description

Account between Matilda, a free black woman, and Henry P. , for years 1803-1818, Shelter Island, N.Y., 1818. Matilda (a free black woman as of 1795), had entered into a contract with Henry Packer upon her manumission; the terms allowed her to live on a parcel of land (without acquiring title); in return for this, as well as the construction of the house, she agreed to pay off the debt. This one page ledger lists various items, including payment due for labor. See also published work "A woman named Matilda and other true accounts of old Shelter Island," manuscript "Certificate of slave Matilda's emancipation" (1795), and manuscript "Contract between Matilda, late a servant of Thomas Esq. deceased, and subscribers" (1798).
