Description
Documents related to the whaling voyage of the bark Nimrod, commanded by Captain James M. Green and under the ownership of Charles T. Dering. These include the crew list and papers concerning discharge and desertion. The first sheet is the crew list, with descriptions for Name, Place of Birth, Place of Residence, Country of Citizenship (currently), and Physical Description (Age, Height, Complexion, Hair). On the reverse side of this same sheet, opposite the captain's signed legal contract, are two other short handwritten and sealed statements: the first acknowledges that a sick crewman was discharged at St. Helena, and the second that another man joined the crew in Indonesia. The third page (and second sheet) is a signed declaration made on St. Helena that after the sick crewman recovered he was sent on a ship back to Sag Harbor. The fourth page (and third sheet) is a signed declaration by the captain about a sailor who deserted the crew while at Annobon (Equitorial Guinea). There are several parallels between the journey of this real life whaling vessel and the famous Pequod of Herman Melville's Moby Dick. Both vessels had crews of roughly the same size, about thirty men. Nimrod departed Sag Harbor the same year the book was published, and visited several of the same locations, with documents mentioning stops at St. Helena and Indonesia.
