Caption on back of photograph reads: At the time this photo was taken in 1943, it is doubtful the young man in the picture realized that he would some day become one of the tribal trustees whose duty it would be to supervise the upkeep of the Shinnecock burying ground. Such is one of the duties of Harry Williams (Chief War Hawk) today. The cemetery lies at the edge of Shinnecock Bay, a beautiful sheet of water, ten miles long and three miles wide. The earliest stone there dates back to 1800 and there are also graves there of those who fought in the Civil War. Visitors will find the graves of the nine Shinnecock full bloods and the one Montauk full blood, who went down with the ship "Circassion" in 1876. In recent years, the tribe has erected a simple monument in honor of these men.
