Thomas Dering farmed and managed Sylvester Manor plantation on Shelter Island. This inventory records his personal possessions prior to the Revolution.

Thomas Dering was a wealthy Boston merchant who married Mary Sylvester, of the prominent family on Shelter Island. Dering owned and operated Sylvester Manor plantation. He later served as a delegate to the Continental Congress. Frederic Mather's The Refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut records Thomas Dering's family among the families that moved from Long Island to Connecticut after Long Island fell under British control.
