Contract between Matilda, late a servant of Thomas Esq. deceased, and subscribers, Shelter Island, N.Y., June 20, 1798. Matilda (a free black woman as of 1795), entered into contract with subscribers of Shelter Island, N.Y., whereby she was to repay said subscribers seventy five U.S. dollars for their construction of a home for her on lot of land on island known as "Hopkin's Lot" (land excluded); witnessed before [Town of Shelter Island] subscribers Richard Fosdick and Sylvester .
