Letter from Joseph H. Hand, at Montauk Point, N.Y., to Nathaniel Huntting, at East Hampton Township, N.Y., alerting him to the activity of British war ships off Montauk Point; April 3, 1813. Letter ("first opportunity" written on address line) describes in detail the dates, movements, and activities of British war ships off Montauk Point, including their capture of American sloops, a 74-gun ship flying French colors but undoubtedly British, their exploration of a boiling spring at Shagwonganock Reef, and their eventual removal to nearby Block Island [R.I.]; author indicates surety of the British plans to return to Montauk, and closes with note of the British not interfering with the local fishermen.
