The Atheneum originally was built as the second structure to house Sag Harbor's Presbyterian Church. It was dedicated as the Church on June 18, 1818. In 1844, it was moved to the Northwest Corner of Church and Union Streets, and given to the Methodist Church. Next, the building became the Atheneum, a Sag Harbor cultural center of sorts. The Atheneum was destroyed by fire on April 30, 1924. A date is estimated based on the photo technology used and the date the Atheneum burned.
