Caption on back of photograph reads: Susan Butler (l) and her sister Ethel, were two of the nine children of Princess Olive Fowler Butler of the Montauks, and Captain Samuel Butler who was a New England Indian. Princess Olive, as she was known in East Hampton, was the sister of Queen Maria Pharoah, who married King David Pharoah of the Montauk Royal family. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in East Hampton. The Butler sisters, Susan, Ethel, Mary, Harriet, Carey and Bertha, were famous for their long straight black hair. All were able to sit on their tresses. The author can remember Ethel Butler always letting down her long black hair in the evening when my cousin and I, together with the family, used to exchange Catawba and Montauk stories in her cozy kitchen. This photo was taken at Springy Banks in East Hampton, which archaeological findings have proven, was a favorite summer camping grounds of the Montauks. It receives its name from the numerous delicious flowing springs of water that flow from the base of the cliffs here. Many an East Hampton and Three Mile Harbor resident speaks with nostalgia of the sweet draughts of water they enjoyed from Springy Banks when it was town property.
