Description

Caption on back of photograph reads: David Fowler, the famous pioneer who led his people from Indian Field, Montauk, to Oneida, New York in 1765, was an ancestor of Marguerite Fowler La Porte. She was born in East Hampton on April 8, 1900, the daughter of Sarah and George Fowler, both Montauks. Her brother Red Man was one of East Hampton's most outstanding all around athletes. Mrs. La Porte was a strong Indian traditionalist and her beadwork collected by the late Frank G. Speck of the University of Pennsylvania, is in the collections of the University of Indiana. She died on October 30, 1944. Note the sharp features and aquiline noses that seem to characterize the Fowlers.
