Description

Distribution of estate of Richard Chasmore/ late of Jamaica, N.Y., March 25, 1663. Henry Townsend, formerly of Rusdorp (Jamaica) N.Y., lately of Oyster Bay, N.Y. (both stated to be in province of New Netherlands), was named executor of estate of late Richard Chasmore, of Jamaica) N.Y.; after collecting Chasmore's debts from Captain Thomas Willet, merchant (for a horse) and butcher/grocer John Barker, Townsend ordered a fund be created to benefit the poor of the town, including widows, children, blind, lame or aged persons, those who have suffered loss by fire, and anyone else unable to find work, etc. This account, to be administered by two townsmen, was to be funded by the proceeds of the sale of Chasmore's properties in the town, and was to include cattle, starting with two and hopefully multiplying, again for the town poor's exclusive use. Townsend also left to his own wife and children his house/home lot, orchard, half of his accomodations and half of meadows (all within town of Rusdorp, or Jamaica, borders). Witnessed before William Graves, of Stanford (Connecticut), and Daniel Denton (of adjoining township of Hempstead).
