Description
Caption on reverse reads: Before oil or gas came into general use, coal was the fuel most commonly used for all heating and cooking purposes. To facilitate handling this heavy, bulky material, a large storage building was built at the East Hampton Lumber Co. yard on Railroad Ave. The coal was brought into the yard by railroad cars and deposited in a pit, from whence it was carried to the top of the building by a bucket chain elevator. It was then conveyed to certain compartments according to size. When wagons and later trucks were to be loaded, they entered into the open area below, pulled a lever and the coal poured down from above. Copy by C. Frank Dayton.
