Postcard image of Jacob Gould Schurman residence, in East Hampton, Long Island, New York on Further Lane. His brother, George Schurman, built a house acorss the street, which was later better known as Lasata.
The Schurman Family was active in the Summer Social Scene, and Jacob Gould Schurman eventually became President of Cornell University, and serve as an Amabassador for the United States in Greece, China, and Germany. The postcard is estimated based on when Jacob and his family appeared in the local newspapers. They later moved to Bedford, New York.

As per family members: The Schurman brothers, George and Jacob Gould Schurman, were descendants of Dutch settlers of New York, but were born on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Their ancestors' came to Canada as Loyalist exiles following the Revolutionary War. The brothers are described as "smart, ambitious men, eager to return to New York." The brothers married sisters, Helen Munro and Catherine Munro, who were the children of a Manhattan real estate developer. The Schurman Family continued to live near each other following their move to Bedford, and many of the family are buried in an Episcopal Churchyard in Bedford. A similar image depicts the gardens at George W. Schurman's home.
