Description
Caption on reverse reads: The James E. Gay carriage and blacksmith shop stood on Gay Road at the same site as the Amaden-Gay Agency. The doors at the front opened into the wheelwright shop, where carriage wheels, spokes, shafts, etc. were made. At the right was the harness making room. At the rear of the building, a large area equipped with two forges, was used exclusively for horse shoeing. In an adjoining area, also equipped with a forge and various iron shaping tools, the iron work for the carriages was made. At the center of the building a large elevator was used to lift vehicles to the second and third floors, which were used for painting, decorating, and storage. The building was completely destroyed by fire in the late 1930's. Copy by C. Frank Dayton.
