Whaling log of the ship Levant, 1855-1856. Pages 1-37 from Hong Kong to various ports (including Australia, Indonesia) (delivering Chinese passengers, unloading whale oil, etc.) 7 February 1855 - 4 May 1855; pp.'s 38-75, gap between 24 August 1855 - 6 September 1855 (pages torn between pp.'s 74-75); pages 76-81 blank, journal resumes pp.'s 82-99, 25 October 1855 - 4 March 1856, ending in Hong Kong (where, according to Starbuck, ship was sold); last two pages contain lists of items stowed in trunks (mostly clothing and utensils), no author or date (in pencil). This volume picks up from journal of same ship (SEE: Whaling log of the ship Levant, 1851-1855), which delivered Chinese passengers to Hong Kong. Journal kept by mate E.D. Grousilliers. Inserted handwritten abstractions of parts of voyage. Name plate attached to cover: M.C. Kendrick Southampton, # 6, 10 (Kendrick was donor). Ship Levant, Mercator Cooper (1803-1872) was master from Hong Kong toward Port Philip 1855.
