Description

Caption on reverse reads: The store at the left, owned by Samuel Gregory & C. was East Hampton's largest store. The front half of the main floor was the dry goods department, the rear half devoted to groceries, and at one time, toys. The Second floor was used for furniture. The Main floor had a unique arrangement for payment of purchases. At each department an overhead trolley wire was connected to a high booth like cage at the side of the store. When a purchase was made, the clerk would reach overhead, remove a small metal cup in which he would place the sales slip and money. Then, after replacing the cup on the wire, would grasp a short dangling rope, and with a violent yank send container whizzing up to the cashier's booth, where the change was made and then with a push, sent down the wire to the clerk. Children were always fascinated with this procedure. At the rear of the store, on what is now a part of the parking, stood horse stables and wagon sheds. Each morning drivers were sent out to take orders throughout the village, and deliveries made in the afternoon. Notice the litter basket hanging on the tree. These baskets, painted green, were spaced along the North side of Main Street.
