Long Island Collection

The Long Island Collection also digitized a series of letters from Jonathan Allen Bennett, written during his service in the Civil War. "Bennett" is one of East Hampton's oldest names and one of its largest families. They are said to have first come to Long Island in the spring of 1639 with Lion Gardiner and lived, at first, on Gardiner's Island. They later settled at Three Mile Harbor at Squaw Cove and Northwest. Jonathan Bennett was an 8th generation member of the Bennett family; a son of whaleman William Jackson Bennett and Phebe Miller. He served in the 127th New York Infantry (also known as The Monitors) during the Civil War and later died on September 11th, 1863, in a camp hospital in Folly Island, South Carolina, which was a major staging area for Union troops in the Charleston region. Jonathan was only 18 years old.
